HISTORY:

1972-1986:

On 1st April 1972, five prior employees of IBM namely Claus Wellenreuther, Dietmar Hopp, Hans Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, and Klaus Tschira started the company System Analysis and Program Development. The main approach of the developers was to create a standard software for enterprises to enable real-time data processing and to integrate all the business processes. The founders along with the former employees of SAP worked too closely with their customers; they often sit in customers’offices, with them to learn about their business needs and processes. After 3 years, they had successfully built applications for invoice verification, inventory management (RM), and financial accounting (RF). The blend of integration, standardization, and real-time data processing was the basis for the transformation of SAP from a small software company into a world leader in business software. In 1979, SAP UK started to develop the second generation of the software R/2.

1987-1999:

While R/2 was experiencing the success of huge sales in 1888, the managers of the company were planning to develop the third generation of the software, SAP R/3. It started with a client-server software which made it a global company having subsidiaries and development centers all over the world. In 1999, launched its mysap.com strategy and after ten years, the company strengthened its base into three new future markets i.e., cloud, database technology, and mobile technology. As SAP wanted to become a chief in these new domains, it acquired several competitors including Ariba, Business Objects, Concur, SuccessFactors, and Sybase.

2011-2019:

By 2011, SAP HANA, the in-memory database was widely used by customers to perform quick data analysis that may otherwise take days or even several weeks to complete. After four years, SAP launched the latest generation of its business software SAP S/4 HANA. In 2019, the company acquired Qualtrics, a US company leading the market of experience management software. This led SAP to the top of this growing segment. Presently, SAP strives to build solutions for machine learning and IoT for blockchain and complex analyses.

SAP HANA is currently available on three of the greatest public cloud platforms. The integrated applications of the company connect every part of a business into a smart suite over a digital platform.
